Walked to Ettinghem [Etinehem] about five miles away and had photo taken*. The German prisoner who got away on May 23rd was shot dead in trying to get out again.

*If this photograph has survived, it is not in my possession. The only known pictures of Leonard from this period of his life were taken before he set off in January 1917.

The following additional information is from Martin Farebrother:

Etinehem on north bank of Somme just west of Bray.

Had a dip in canal twice to-day and went to B105 in evening for a walk.

Was paid 30 Francs to-day. Rumour has it that we are going to Russia.

Had a trip to B108 to see one of my chums who is stationed there.

A German prisoner escaped in Cappy, but was recaptured before many hours.

Heavy bombardment during night and several bombs dropped by Taubes in this vicinity.

Found two lots of money. A 6 Francs and a 40 Francs lot. Have sent in the bigger lot to H.Q. as I know who’s [sic] it is.

The maintenance people have had orders to return to their units and go tomorrow.

Went to B106 to see one of my mates. Two or three Taubes over during day.
