Wednesday 27th March, 1963

Continued from Tuesday 26th March, 1963

Not much improvement in the weather – rain during the morning spoiling any opportunity of getting on the garden. A dozen angle iron stakes I ordered from a Wolverhampton firm arrived yesterday afternoon so I hammered in 6 of them to hold the wire for the last two rows of raspberry canes. Then Bill Aston looked round and said he had heard the man from Tilbury Docks had been appointed stationmaster at Swindon and since his move it had now been ascertained that both stations had been placed in the same category. Some move. Everybody now waiting to hear what is in the Beeching Report. Just heard on TV at 1 p.m. that it is anticipated some 70000 railway men will be made redundant in the next five years.

Mum went over to Cornishes this morning and found Mrs Cornish under doctor for burst chilblains – she can only just hobble about but doctor has told her to keep on her feet as much as possible. Mr Cornish apparently is also suffering from same trouble but he can manage to get on his bicycle and ride down to pub satisfactorily.

Most of the shrubs in the garden are now showing signs of coming to life again so perhaps we have now turned towards the better weather – it still keeps very cold though down here.

Getting towards bottom of page now so will close with all our love to you both and lots of kisses for the girls. Only a fortnight tomorrow and we hope to be on the road heading to Ruislip.

Mum and Dad.
